Saving you time is synonymous with Husqvarna, whose range of robotic mowers were launched in 1995. Still a market leader, the company offers a range of Automower models, with a version to suit almost every type of garden.
How does it work?
Automower mows within an electric boundary wire that is installed a couple of inches below the soil – you can do this yourself, but most customers opt to have a Husqvarna dealer carry out the installation. Trees, shrubs and flowerbeds are circumvented using guide wires to create electronic “islands”, which Automower avoids. Constrained by the boundary wire, the robot mows in a random pattern, leaving no ugly striations and, with a cutting height of 20mm to 60mm, a uniform result. It mows wet grass as well as it does dry, and there are no clippings to get rid of, either, as these mulch into the soil as the mower goes along, nourishing the grass and preventing moss growth.
Completing the job
And you don’t need to worry about it doing a half-hearted job either. Once the battery power drops to a certain level, Automower trundles back to its docking station to recharge, either by following a radio signal sent from the station, or by following a guide wire or the boundary wire back to the dock. After replenishing, it continues on its way, or stays put for next time if the task is completed.
But the real beauty of Automower is that you don’t have to be around for it to do its job. It can be pre-programmed in two ways, either from the information panel inside the mower or, if you buy an X-line model, from the Automower Connect app on your smartphone, giving you complete flexibility and control from anywhere in the world. You can programme the robotic mower day by day, to come on at night only (it’s quiet, emitting as little as 58 dB(A), so won’t disturb the neighbours), for several periods in one day – whatever your preference. The Automower Connect app is optional on the 300 and 400 series models, too.
